The scarf William Henry Bishop wears has a vivid pattern that contrasts with his plain Jacket, which seems to be Federal. He also wears a M1851 Federal enlistedman's belt plate with applied German silver wreath. A pair of Colt type revolvers are stuck underneath his waist belt.

I searched www.civilwardata.com for all William H. Bishops (the middle name or initial was not required on most enlistment papers) and found 24. The double pistols, with short jacket and correct plate for either cavalry or artillery, suggest cavalry, so I looked at each service record. Five of the 24 did serve cavalry, but their middle names are not detailed, so it could be any of the five. Then, too, there are 83 William Bishop (no mid initial showing), so they would also have to be searched. I suspect the actual name of this soldier will forever be lost to Father Time.
