For George Martin

George it was the 42nd Tennessee and not the 43rd. What can I say just getting old. George W. Foster was one of the soldiers but also carried as G. W. Foster, same soldier.

The other was David James Atkinson. Only by pulling his pension records was I able to see the whole story including saying they were deserters from the USS Essex.

The Union clerks at Fort Delaware were not interested in long stories about deserting at Port Hudson and they listed them as being captured at the Gettysburg Campaign. Of course the 42nd Tennessee were about 1,000 miles away from Gettysburg.

Anyone wanting to know the entire story about these two may write to Hugh Simmons for a copy of the magazine and there may be a charge from the Fort Delaware Society?
