The ancestor of George P.

George, I left a message on the Georgia board about your question; this appears to be your soldier. The information was found using the Nationwide Gravesite Locator which I sometimes use. It's run by the National Cemetery Administration from what I recall. Tylertown is located in Walthall County, Mississippi and as I recall you were born in this county and he had enlisted in the 7th Mississippi not too far from there. The phone number is listed below and perhaps you can gain additional information. I would not think there were too many Mississippi soldiers with the name of Richard B. Pittman who died on September 20, 1863. This site is like all others and does contain some errors however in my opinion the majority of information is correct on this site. I do not know when he was buried there only assuming that he was and I don't know if he has a tombstone by his grave. Hopefully the cemetery will have some information when you call them. It looks like the Thomas Cemetery is about 100 miles from Gulfport, Mississippi. Because of his good service ie being slightly wounded while assaulting Union breastworks prior to Chickamauga it would not surprised me if his body was taken back to Mississippi shortly after Chickamauga but that is only conjecture on my part. I've been really busy doing Camp Chase and check in on the board every now and then and is the reason why my post is so late. The Confederate dead at Chickamauga were buried in many locations and some like your ancestor may have been taken back home or near there. It's possible to use ancestry and look on the 1850 and 1860 United States census to see where he was living at in Mississippi. While we don't stop and think about it even though the Battle of Chickamauga was a Confederate victory there were few Confederates taken as POW's. From my research in this limited area a few of the Confederate POW's at the battle were taken to Fort Delaware; how and when they were taken to Fort Delaware I do not know. It's also plausible some were taken to other northern prison camps as well.
