Hi James, I believe there were over 300 Black Men that drew Confederate pensions from South Carolina. The vast majority were Body-Servants,Cooks, and Musicians. Of course the other side of that argument is "cooks and musicians aren't really soldiers". I know of a Thomas Tobe, (free-born) that drew a soldiers pension from SC, and had a letter verifying that he was an enlisted soldier. Possibly two free-born brothers, James and Levi Russell were Cooks in the 24th SC. James reportedly was captured or killed at Missionary Ridge.
