Re: How Do I Tell Who Owned Slaves In The 26th VA?

RayL is exactly correct. Company D of the 26th Virginia had some soldiers from Mathews County, Virginia as an example. So you would need to look at all the soldiers in Company D and then match them up with the 1850 and 1860 United States census, some may be from Mathews County while others may be from adjacent counties and from other areas of the State or out of States. Look for personal value in the 1860 census. If it's more than $1,000.00 then look in the 1860 slave schedule and try to match up the name. Don't believe that just officers owned slaves because enlisted men sometimes owned them too. And sometimes when a man married he may not have owned slaves but inherited them from marriage. However since slaves were property you may have to look in various places. Just as some rich people today may own several homes in a State or States so too was the case with slaves back in the day. If you want to do a good job it would probably take about five years of research to do a complete regiment working about 20 hours a week. I'm basing that on my work at Camp Chase with over 2,000 Confederate graves to see how many actually owned slaves.
