I agree with you James. Jack Hayes was unique and he might have been the greatest Indian fighter of his day---certainly if he would have had stayed with the Rangers. No matter the caliber and determination of the older and younger men, they lacked experience and good leadership due to the void created by the war. They did the best with what they had and we should all be very proud of them.
A really good book that sheds light on these years and a lot more is "Empire of the Summer Moon". Have you heard of it? The book is about the reign of the Comanches from the 18th Century to the end and there is enough information about Quanah Parker to make a 'book within a book'.
