George, the WBTS gave many Irish Fenians on both sides (Union and Confederate) training in weapons and battlefield tactics. There were quite a few attempts between 1866 to 1870 to invade British Canada by Irish Americans. They hoped to spur an uprising against British rule in Ireland by starting a "second front" so to speak.
