Re: Polk Miller A Confederate Veteran Sings

When James Agnew Polk Miller was born on August 2, 1844, in Prince Edward County, Virginia, his father, Giles, was 31 and his mother, Jane, was 31. He married Maude Lee Withers on November 29, 1871. They had three children in 20 years. He died on October 20, 1913, in Bon Air, Virginia, at the age of 69.

After the Civil War he founded a pharmacy in Richmond where he developed medicines for domestic animals. He turned that into a successful company he named Sergeant's after his dog. Sergeant's remains a leading pet food and medicine company. Miller learned to play the banjo as a child and was noted for his talent at a young age. In the 1890's, after turning over his business to his son, he became a full time performer.
