Re: Missouri Bill Board
In Response To: Re: Missouri Bill Board ()

Danny why should it stop? In my opinion the figure of 75,000 is a reasonable number. I am continually finding new names and numbers to add to SHAPE's Negroes In Gray website. At the present time we have some 10,000+ listed and I know there are many that I have no info on like Jackson's Batt. of Engineers. I am not saying all of these are soldiers, but there is proof that served the Confederacy in some capacity.

Let me give you a couple of examples of what I have---

Jenny-- Negro Girl-- Received at the Myrtle Street Prison the 13th day of Feb. 1864 from Peter Coring, US officer. Sent forward from Prov. Mar. Genl on the first day of February 1864. By order of Col. Marsh.

Signed William Lonergan--Keeper

I also ask that you visit SHAPE's page at http://negrosingrey.southernheritageadvancementpreservationeducation.com/page.php?11
to get an idea of the figures thrown out and the arguments about these figures.

I also ask you to read John Minon's article in the NAACP publication "Crisis" at--- s://books.google.com/books?id=H7ttGoZ5KkEC&pg=PA231&lpg=PA231&dq=black+volunteers+in+a+Mississippi+militia&source=bl&ots=t-bqATR1EP&sig=AXIR-406VKGDWPE1SU-Y6LToK6s&hl=en&ei=UoX0TMifAsT6lweNpLXmBQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result#v=onepage&q=black%20volunteers%20in%20a%20Mississippi%20militia&f=false

Also in books or letters etc, I have found references such as Jim, Sam Smith's boy. I try to record all info as references and be as accurate as possible. If you come across something, please list the source and I will look it up.

Thanks,
George
