Re: James 'Jim' Jewell, 1st US Vol. Inf.

John, like George I see where he filed for a Confederate pension but do not see where he was approved for one. We only have his word and that of one other soldier if I remember correctly that he had been wounded prior to the end of the war. When he joined the Union army he should have had a declaration of recruitment papers and Volunteer Oath of enlistment papers. When he signed his name or made his mark he became a United States soldier. Like anyone else I was not there and don't want to pass judgment for his motives. He may have joined his old unit again but his prior service records with the 10th Virginia could have been better. Insofar as him being transferred to Elmira in my opinion he had probably been slated to be transferred but with his enlistment in the United States Army it had been cancelled. I did not see him arriving at Elmira, New York on his Federal POW records.

As usual George has provided an excellent overall documentation for this soldier. Please excuse me for intruding on this post and for entertaining my opinion which I must say is not always correct.
