There were a number of fevers which were lumped under the name Camp fevers, cause by poor sanitation, bad drinking water, and exposure. Yellow Fever was very much a part of the Southern experience with swamps, and lack of proper waste disposal. Oddly enough the United Nations World Health Organization (W.H.O.) is reporting a rising number of Yellow Fever cases in western Africa today. They fear a larger outbreak of that than the Ebola Virus of a couple of years ago.
Cholera (another sanitation issue disease) is rampent in Haiti.
