Re: More on Free Lewis

After looking over his application and comparing it to my references, this is his military history.

He enlisted with the Westville Guards, Co. B, 16th Mississippi under Captain Funchess and was transferred from the regiment while they were in winter camp in January 1862 near Manassas, Va. He saw some fighting with skirmishes around Centreville, and Fairfax Court House, Virginia, Oct. 10-17, 1861.

He transferred to "Stubbs Battalion" (George W. Stubbs). This would indicate he was assigned to Mississippi State Cavalry forces in the Mississippi,-Alabama area. Not much documentation on these units. It would answer the question how did he get married in 1864-65 to a Simpson County woman. There is a parole roll dated May 17, 1864, Jackson, Miss. that shows a Private "L. Dickson" of Simpson County assigned to Co. B, Yerger's Cavalry Regiment with George W. Stubbs as Lt. Col. Company B- was Captain J. C. Barnes' Company of Home Guard of Simpson County. According to 1860 census data there is no L. Dickson in Simpson County.

On another note I erred. His wound was not caused by an explosion as I assumed, it was caused by "exposure"...causing "irreversible hernia hydrocele hip joint disease". He states at the time of surrender his unit was just outside of Port Gibson, Miss.

The O.R. confirms that Stubb's Battalion of State Troops numbering 175 mounted men being twenty-four mile south of Jackson and six miles west of the Pearl River (Copiah County...about twenty-five miles from his home) In November of 1864... and Confederate scouts (two companies) between Raymond and Port Gibson. In January, 1865 Stubb's Battalion would see action against a Union Raiding force out of Vicksburg against Yazoo City.
