Salathiel Smith Co. H 3rd Miss.

Looking for military and census records for Salathiel Smith, Co. H 3rd Regt. Miss. Infantry. I will be portraying him in a Cemetery tour in October, and would like to know more about his service.

He was born in Wayne county 1823 and had five brothers also born in Jasper or Wayne county. In 1852 he moved to the Mississippi coast and married in 1854, Clemetine Ladner. He was a carpenter by trade and helped build the Brown estate (Later Beauvoir). He was postmaster at Mississippi City when the war broke out. He joined the Dahlgren Guards raised in Harrison County and served on the coast until the regiment left for Kentucky in the fall of 1861. He is not listed on the NPS Sailor's and Soldiers site, so we can only presume that he returned and was re-enlisted at Camp Moore in May 1862, served at Vicksburg, the Atlanta campaign, and surrendered in NC. We know he survived the war and returned to Mississippi, settling in the Pass Christian and Long Beach area. He helped build the first shell road along the coast from Biloxi to Pass Christian, present day route of US 90 (ca 1879-85). His wife of 58 years died in 1892 and he decided to live out his days at Beauvoir where he died March 31, 1915 at the age of 92. He asked to be buried in the Long Beach City Cemetery. His marker proudly records his service in Co. H 3rd Miss.

We want to get his history right, so any help is appreciated.
