Last Months Barnes Review has a feature story by Pat Shannan - Mr Shannan did extensive research on the "real" history of Newton Knight.
Newton volunteered twice for the Confederate Army .. but left disgustedly when the Confederacy brought in a law that said "land owners" didn't have to fight.
The North had the same laws, Andrew Carnegie spent $27.00 so He didn't have to fight.
Newton was disgusted by both armies.
Newton left His wife and children and married a slave, but insisted on staying on the home farm!
What do You call a man who leaves his wife and children, and then marries someone else but stays in the same farm?
I can think of many terms, but "HERO" is not one of them!
