Yes sir. Captain "Pleasant Gardens Joe" McDowell served in the NC Militia and he fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain. His cousin, Joseph "Quaker Meadows" McDowell, Jr. also fought in that battle. One or the the other was a major who led the militia into battle and got most of the honors. Both of them were statesmen and legislatures. So, the former was my uncle and the latter is a cousin. I have had some trouble telling them apart.
As for the combat engineers, I understand. My uncle was riding in a half track which was third in a convoy of armored vehicles entering Neustadt, Germany. A sniper was positioned in a tower that straddled the road and he was picking off men as they passed by. After he killed my uncle, one of his comrades shot him with a BAR and tanks were brought up front to blow up the tower.
