Capt. George P. Ring, Post of Montgomery, Ala.

RICHMOND, VA., March 28, 1865.

Capt. GEORGE P. RING, Sixth Louisiana Regiment, Montgomery, Ala.:

SIR: You are hereby authorized to raise a company of negro troops in the State of Alabama, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved March 13, 1865, as promulgated in General Orders, No. 14, Adjutant and Inspector Generals Office, current series. The authority will expire sixty days from this date, if the company be not raised within that time.

By command of the Secretary of War:
JOHN W. RIELY, Assistant Adjutant- General.

The Alabama Dept. of Archives and History has Montgomery newspapers online. I checked all available issues after March 28-

Montgomery Daily Mail- March 29, April 2, 7, 8, 9, & 11.
Memphis Daily Appeal (published in Montgomery)- March 30.

I did not find any mention of Ring or a company of black troops. There is a notice dated April 4 (see April 9 edition) that calls for "every man capable of bearing arms" to aid in defense of the city. Gen John T. Morgan's plan for raising black troops appears in the April 8 edition.
