According to Knight, he enlisted in the 8th Mississippi in 61 due to threats on his life. He requested a leave because his father was dying. The first card in his record file seems to me to say he enlisted with the understanding he would be granted leave. His father's grave is unmarked, but a find-a-grave memorial says his father died in 1864.

The fact the Government failed on three different occasions to award he and his followers any monetary composition says it all for me.
