My understanding of this cemetery is that the Confederate portion, with separate graves and markers, existed after the war. That sometime before the turn of the 20th century the city decided to expand into the cemetery and they chose to dig up the Confederates and deposit them into a mass grave with a marker saying "1,600 unknown Confederates". Some locals later discovered this and found the records. The monument was changed to add the names of who was buried there sometime in the 20th Century. Since one of these men (maybe more) is a relative... a direct relative... I find this outrageous.
