In the book "Black Confederates" by Barrow, Segars, and Rosenberg, they list a "Henson Revels as a Private in the 1st Battalion NC Heavy Artillery." On 7/17/1862 a John Revels (again no mention of his race,) enlisted in Company K 57th NC infantry. He died of hepatitis, pneumonia, & fever) in a Petersburg, Virginia hospital, 3/1/1865.
