I'm not an advocate of the 50,000 figure; all I'm saying is that it has been used by some to suggest that Canadians were pro-North. Winks I believe discusses the "myth" surrounding this figure. In searching through Canadian newspapers from the era I've seen the figure of 30,000 used. Personally, my own list of men born in Canada is in the 6,000 range. This excludes New Hampshire, and only includes fragmentary information from New York, Michigan, and Illinois, which I believe are the states where most Canadian-born men would have enlisted. All things considered I'm not sure I will be able to fully research this.
