Re: Anta Madjiguene Ndiaye; a slave owner

Michael, This is a black woman who herself had been a slave. A very rare example of a black woman owning slaves prior to the WBTS. BTW her given married name also appears as Anna Kingsley. The 1850 United States census listed her name as Hannah Kingsley while the 1860 census listed her name as Anna Pingsley and both census reports listed her birth place as Africa. From my understanding Florida did not recognize her claim after her husbands death but because of the couple had lived in Florida under Spanish rule in the very early 1800's she was allowed to keep a portion of her estate including some of the slaves. I believe the court said she was awarded 1/12 of a percent of the estate. Some people have noted that she owned the largest number of slaves in Florida prior to the war but Nathan with the NPS at the Kingsley Plantation says that is not the case. She may have been the only black woman in the State of Florida to have owned slaves? Although I did not find her name as owning slaves in the 1850 or 1860 slaves schedules there is some evidence to support the claim that she did. Probably the best source is a book written about her. The author also has a site on Wikipedia under Anna Kingsley.
