Anta Madjiguene Ndiaye; a slave owner

Anta Madjiguene Ndiaye was from the tribe of Wolof in Africa. The Wolof tribe themselves practiced slavery. She was sold into slavery and ended up being owned by a white slave trader name Zephaniah Kingsley. Mr. Kingsley would marry Anta Madjiguene Ndiaye and her new name became Ann Kingsley. The Kingsley's became wealthy land owners and had a large slave population and settled in the area of Jacksonville, Florida.

Zephaniah died in 1843; two years before Florida entered the Union. Ann Kingsley then herself became a black female slave holder and stayed in that status up until the WBTS. When the war started she left for the State of New York and returned after the war. Today a part of the Kingsley Plantation is owned by the National Park Service.

Special thanks to the UDC of Jacksonville for telling me of this little know area of American History. I also spoke with Nathan at the NPS and he confirmed this story and added a little information as posted above. Ann Kingsley died in 1870 in Jacksonville, Florida.
