That has always been the hypocracy of the Northern War effort. Were the southern states during the War states in rebellion within the United States, OR were they actually a foriegn nation independent?

It was illegal to blockade the ports of States within the United States. It was illegal to use the United States Military against citizens of the United States. These were things that could only be done against a foriegn nations. The United States Constitution expressly forbids the dividing of a state of the United States (like Virginia ) into two States. Yet it was done. It was Illegal for the 101st Airborne Division to be sent to Little Rock in 1957. Yet it was done also.

So what good is our so called "Constitution"?
