Marching through Georgia

Not too long after the war a former Union soldier made a bet that he could walk through Georgia with a United States Flag without harm. He made the march.

Today an Alabama man is marching through Georgia with a CBF and has had numerous encounters. A SCV member in the Heard County Rangers in Georgia encountered the man.

"Johnny Cooper, a 60-year-old Hazel Green man, is continuing his march to Washington, DC with the Confederate flag despite its removal in South Carolina and the violence he has faced on the road.

Cooper began the 790 mile journey on the Fourth of July, and when we spoke to him two days in, the trip had been peaceful.

But that all changed on Thursday as he continued his march through the state of Georgia. The walk turned violent as one person threw glass bottles at Cooper and two cars swerved to try to hit him. One man even got out of his car and waved a tire iron at Cooper.

His wife tells me Cooper thought about coming home because of the danger, but a group called 2 Million Bikers to DC stepped up to provide security for his march.

The group, which was founded after 9/11 to honor victims and support armed forces, has already sent bikers to Cooper's aid. Co-founder Belinda Bee said the march caught her eye because Cooper is carrying the flag peacefully while others lash out against him.

"As Americans, we need to come together and stop hating objects,"Bee said.

Bee also said there is another group from 2 Million Bikers to DC that is driving up from Florida in an RV to provide additional security for Cooper's march."
