Fascinating, all right. I have an ad from an Oregon newspaper (December of 1853) in which JWK is a reference for a general commissary merchant in San Francisco. Earlier ads would help me date from when he first arrived on the West Coast. Now how's this for another mystery? An official document--"An Account of the Records and Expenditures of the U.S., 1867-1868" has a "J. W. Kitteridge" listed as an "acting assistant paymaster." Could this be my JWK? Doesn't seem likely since my guy left the navy in disgrace, but perhaps he somehow weaseled an appointment? He is known for being clever. The name doesn't appear again in navy listings.
