Re: South Carolina and the Confederate Flag

My personal condolences are with those nine who were murdered in a House of God.

From the high school kids I've spoken to over the years in the South, they don't even know who Jefferson Davis was. Perhaps ours is the last generation who still appreciates what the common southern people sacrificed during the war and the many blacks who supported the southern people in their efforts and not through slavery but as volunteers as cooks, laborers, teamsters etc. The State of South Carolina was among some southern states gave pensions after the war to some blacks who had done this duty.

I believe the eye of the hurricane insofar as anti Confederate issues will pass in a few days as the news media will soon get tried of old news.

When General Lee surrendered he also surrendered his dead and they became Americans once again not traitors or an evil people but Americans. I've always been impressed of the Confederate soldiers overall ability to stay in the fight as long as they did.

When I hear radio broadcast of a former Confederate soldier and writings done after the war by other former Confederates they all stated the same thing. The war was over States Rights and in my opinion I fail to understand why some historians and teachers want to tell them they were incorrect. It was their words and who is anybody to say they were incorrect as they should know why they went to war.

We should not dictate to other states what to do with their Confederate symbols and I do believe it's up to the people of that state to decide. While I do still feel it was inappropriate for South Carolina to hoist the CBF on their State Capitol because of their reasoning over segregation it was something we could not control. However the current backlash is a bit too much in my opinion and like mud thrown at a barn door some of it will stick and some of it will fall off but better days are ahead.
