And.....one of the reasons that Yankees wanted to ban slavery in the new states is that they did not want black people for neighbors. When someone challenges you, and they will, explain the Exclusion Laws in IL, Ohio, Pennsylvania and some other God forsaken Midwest state and Massachusetts and so forth. While it is true that white Southerners had black codes before and after the War, they also had 4 million black neighbors who were competing for food, wages and other things needed to survive in a shattered economy.
Yankees took credit for freeing slaves, but they did not welcome black people to immigrate to their communities.
