Yes, Bob did take the Oath of Allegiance. That is the record I posted. He did not take the oath at Camp Douglas, he took it at Ft. Donelson a year after the battle----perhaps two months after his desertion.

It was Bob's future father-in-law who took the Oath of Allegiance in captivity. Jack Gardner took the oath on 20 March 1862 so he could go home and kill some more Yankees.

This is why I am interested in the Union Provost Marshal records. It is my best chance of finding out what Bob and his brother did (or did not do) after 1862. All of them survived the war.

As for Hercules, I do not know why a 68 year old man felt compelled to take the Oath of Amnesty unless he was under some kind of duress. It could be that his sons were partisans and some neighbors ratted on them. A lot of ratting by Unionists was going on in Middle TN.
