From the Union Provost Marshal records:

Buchanan Hercules Oath of Amnesty 1864 Fort Donelson 8819

Buchanan Robert Oath of Allegiance 1863 Fort Donelson 4430

Robert aka Bob served in the 50th TN Infantry and was surrendered after the Battle of Ft. Donelson. He was exchanged and left Camp Douglas in September 1862. He deserted the army on 30 Dec 1862 with some other men in his regiment and returned to Stewart County (Ft. Donelson) in Feb. 1863. He married Mary Ann Gardner in Jan. 1864. She was the daughter of Andrew Jackson (Jack) Gardner who fought that duel between the batteries and the Union Navy at Ft. Henry. He signed the oath at Alton, IL and then returned home and joined Napier's Battalion of partisans. So, there is a family history of using the oath to buy enough time to distract the Yankees, do some farming and a little freedom fighting on the side.
