Thanks David. Herb, you know that Davis was comparing Confederate armies to Union armies. In that speech, I bet he mentioned Sherman's March to Hell and other atrocities in GA and elsewhere. Not that regular Confederate soldiers and partisans were all clean, but there is no comparison with the Union armies. That is something profound about the ANV. There was no indiscriminate widespread plundering and pillaging when they had to opportunity for some payback. General Lee took the high road though his army was tattered and short of every type of resource.
