In the Texas House of Representatives, there is currently a proposed House Bill to rename "Confederate Heroes Day" and call it "Civil War Remembrance Day". While the PC intent is obvious to educated folks, the author of the bill is hoping there will be very little organized opposition and it will pass without any fuss. I do not disagree with David's point of view. I believe it is unrelated to this issue because Robert E. Lee's birthday has been recognized in Texas for decades. My father moved to Texas after WWII and he was surprised and impressed to see that on Confederate Heroes Day, banks and public schools would shut down in observance. As the saying goes, 'The way we recognize Confederate soldiers today will be the way future generations see WWII veterans one hundred and fifty years from now'. And if this is an exaggeration, then at the very least it will inform everyone that heroes will not be honored through the ages because their deeds have a shelf life, not to exceed 150 years.
Some people have a misconception about Texas; that our culture is all homogeneous. In 1860, the majority of Texans were immigrants from Southern states who first arrived in East TX and SE TX. That was and still is the Deep South. The population of Texas has grown so much in recent decades that it is now the second most populous state in America. Most people do not care about history or heritage and that is why slick politicians who have no respect for my heritage have been able to whittle away at it. Public schools named after Confederates have been replaced, one by one, until it has become difficult to find any. I do have Yankee friends and they point out to me that it is the natural consequence of losing a war....that we lose our right to honor our ancestors in public or at least, that we should not object to having a Lincoln Memorial in Richmond, VA or an "historical" marker in Georgia that excuses Sherman's March when even he owned up to it.
