Free negroes and mulattoes were also excluded from the service in the militia in the following States; Massachusetts Connecticut as late as 1866 and even up to 1875, New Hampshire up to 1852 and afterward, Pennsylvania up to 1872, New Jersey op to 1874, and later Vermont up to 1871, Indiana up to the present time Illinois up to 1870 Iowa up to 1857 and probably up to this time Michigan up to 1870 Wisconsin up to 1858 probably later, Minnesota the same, Nevada up to 1873 probably to the present time, Kansas up to 1859 and probably till 1868.
