Re: Civil War Trust chimes in on Black Confederate

Most, if not all, the former Confederate States paid pensions to former "Body Servants" or "Body Guards." The States didn't call them "Soldiers Pensions." Some were listed on the muster rolls as "servant or slave " some weren't. Levi Miller wasn't on the roll of the 5th Texas, but the men considered him as much a soldier as they. So the revisionists say, "they weren't really soldiers." or I hear a lot of, "a pension doesn't make a soldier." That will probably be argued from now on. I would think being shot by a black cook would have the same effect on a Yankee, as being shot by Stonewall Jackson ! The Union 13th Tennessee Cavalry had over 20 Black men, cooks and teamsters. several drew pensions after the war. Does the revisionist crowd consider them soldiers ?

The few listed, "free colored," "free negro," free black," or maybe "mulatto," and were on the regiments muster roll, were ranked and had a specific duty, it's my understanding they were paid ($11.00 a month) like everyone else. They're saying there weren't any because they weren't organized into units like "1st Confederate Colored Infantry," or "2nd Confederate Cavalry, (African Descent.) That's just as silly as it sounds or reads ! They know better, but they have to have some sort of come-back. They can talk about Native-American, Hispanic, Tejano, Creole, Irish, and Jewish Confederates all the live-long day ! Mention the few so-called "Black Confederates," and they start gnashing their teeth ! Maybe we should start talking about "Rainbow Confederates" It seems to me the Confederate Army was integrated long before the Union Army.

These colored WOMEN were on the muster-rolls of the 63rd Georgia Infantry. If someone can check their actual records at Fold 3, I betcha it shows they were paid.
