In his own words, from his pension application, Levi Miller states he entered Company C 5th Texas Infantry, "as a slave and servant to his Captain, John Johnson McBride, and stayed with him until he was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness, May 6th, 1864." He is credited with removing his Captain from the battlefield and probably saving his life and saving him from capture. As a resident of Virginia, he was awarded a pension years before Virginia began paying Confederate pensions to Black Men. http://books.google.com/books?id=36...rce=web&ots=tXpOoarJBy&sig=rT3aWBOtSQHW6Yq-ZZ
