Hammond said, "The Constitution has been adopted by an overwhelming majority AGAINST Rhett & Co., Slave Traders, Free Traders, Fire-eaters and extremists...and I suppose this is an end of them." He thought that, certainly, Rhett and his kind brought about secession, and he was delighted to see him repeatedly repudiated....[they were] "Restless, reckless, ambitious, selfish and fanatical as they were, I do not think they would have been bribed by the 30 or 30 thousand pieces of silver, and therefore they are not bound to hang themselves as Judas did."
