Again, look at the date. February ,1861. To justify their movement to disunion, the fire-eaters, in those early secession States, pushed the pro-slavery idea. By April 1861 the general public in the slave States pretty much rejected what had been crammed down the throat of Southerners by the disunionist. Many southerners knew that secession was the end of the slave culture, even if no war came. Expansion of slavery into the new territories, as a political complaint, was known as a lie. And by 1860 most people knew Plantation slavery could not survive west past Missouri. Many of those who demonstrated the loudest for secession prior to Fort Sumter, could not be found in Confederate uniform by 1862.

After Fort Sumter and Lincoln's call to invade the South everything changed. The secession movement exploded and thousands rushed to enlist to fight against Lincoln and his war.
