Re: Declarations of Immediate Causes

I believe that if you actually read those Declarations of Causes you will find that much more that just slavery was included in those Declarations. Each State that seceeded had their reasons for doing so and all declared that the real reason for their secession was the overreach of the Federal Government.

South Carolina made its stand well known prior to the election of Lincoln. 6 others (Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida and Texas) seceeded because of the attempt to use force by the United States Army to blockade the port of Charleston at Fort Sumter and the "Star of the West" Incident. The final 4 States (Virginia, North Carolina,Tennesee, and Arkansas) seceeded after Lincoln demanded they sent soldiers to fight against those states that had previously seceeded, and that after Lincoln had made a second attempt to reenforce the occupation of Fort Sumter and straggle the port and City of Charleston.

Secession for what ever reason was not then, and still is not illegal under the Constitution even today. And was taught that way in the institutions of higher learning such as the United States Military Academy. It was a Right of the States to either be a part of the United States or not to be.
