There is no Confederate memorial in Simpson County, Mississippi where I grew up. That county produced over a half dozen companies, one that served with distinction throughout the war in Virginia with the 16 Miss. But there is no monument anywhere. I put the cause of this to the wealth of the county after the war and some events that caused the loss of physical history for most of the county. A fire in the 1870s destroyed the courthouse in Westville. In 1905-07 the county seat was moved about 15 miles away to where a new railroad was built, the oldest town in the county, Westville, was eventually abandoned and torn down. Westville was the mustering center for the area during the war. Also, the county spent probably 100 times more to build the new courthouse in 1906 than any other courthouse previous, a building that is still in use today. Simpson County is a poor county, and was so before, during and after the war. It has always had a high rate of population loss that keeps the number of people low. With all of these factors and more, the county lost its memory of history of its men during the war very quickly.
