Hello Steve, I had thought that same question after learning how many of the descendants were still living in the area. You and I both know that there are some people within any family who could care less about their genealogy and history in general. And that is the question that was posed to the local genealogist who even had some neighbors who were descendants of this family. Who was the family historian? He did not know the answer.

Although I don't know the answer it would seem logical it might be based on first come, first serve once the family documentation has been provided. While the medal itself is nice I don't believe it would command a huge monetary value so that might help things a bit should it come down to squabbling which I hope it does not. That is one of the reasons why I did not mention the soldiers name or location on this online. Research years ago led me to believe this might be the correct soldier but not until record group 94 was pulled at the NARA would I be able to confirm this was the correct soldier. And of all days.........Veteran Day. I had taken hundreds of photographs at D.C. last week and was going through them when I noticed the finds.

Although the article "Blue Among Gray?" was published a couple of years ago there had been six Union soldiers who had Confederate tombstones at the Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery and now there are eight. While I have reservations about their bodies actually being in the cemetery there is no question they have Confederate tombstones there. There is one more who I feel is a United States soldier but as yet I cannot link him.

The Camp Chase biographies are coming along nicely and soon I'll be able to state that X number of the dead at the Chase Cemetery were West Virginias. One of my goals had been to return West Virginia history but I had no idea it would come to this point.
