True the Nullification Crisis was still in everyone's memory, but the debates on the Compromise of 1850 and the reintroduction of the Wilmot Proviso had the fire-eaters in South Carolinians upset. The Nashville Disunion Convention was in full swing in the fall of 1850 and South Carolina fire-eaters were there pushing for secession even though it was not taken too seriously by most of the South. So to calm everyone down they sent in these troops. It only made matters worse.
