On this date 150 years ago, an expedition to the Confederate coast left Hampton Roads, Virginia, under the command of Federal General Thomas W. Sherman and Flag Officer Samuel Du Pont. The fleet of 77 vessels carried one of the largest forces yet assembled by the United States, consisting of about 12,000 men. The ships were soon to experience difficult weather in storms off of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
