Dumping that many federal troops into a place not used to so many caused problems with the populace. The papers talk of mistreatment and crimes by these soldiers who do what soldier have always done, especially soldiers that are displaced from their point of origin. They seem to been posted their for about a year. In that time the resentment of federal authority grew leaps and bounds in Charleston. A sentry at the post that would be Fort Sumter threatened to shoot workers from the city from landing to perform their work...this did not go over very well in the papers.
