I always maintained that no general killed more yankee soldiers than Grant, not even General Lee. There is certainly a large amount of subjectivity in that statement. If Grant had led the AOP in the beginning, while Stonewall Jackson was still operating, the War might have been won by the South. Imagine Grant trying to win the Peninsula War with his cannon fodder tactics while some nit- wit like Burnside or Hooker (under Halleck) was just pretending to take on Ft. Donelson and Vicksburg. They would have made Braxton Bragg look like he knew what he was doing. The what-if's are infinite, but Grant was an over-rated general. If he had the South's resources in 1864 and Lee had the Union's resources, the Confederacy would have won the War.
