Usually it depends on the state law which enabled a pension grant. Alabama law specifically excluded men whose sole claim to service was in the militia or home guards. The pension application, even if it was denied, could still be quite interesting.
As mentioned earlier, Confederate veterans would become irate and hostile at the mere mention of their service being the same as a militiaman or home guard. You can easily understand why.
