I should have been more clear with the use of the term "Creole". My intention was never to introduce modern connotations or "political correctness", but to speak in terms being used at the time of the Civil War. As you can see from David Upton's wonderful post on Creoles, as well as the correspondence between the Secretary of War and General Dabney H. Maury, in the 1860s many Southerners thought of Negro blood when they heard the term "Creole."
