Ya know? Just maybe most people have just accepted the slavery idea and they may never have heard of some of these things that we're reading now. If one were to look at just one event or issue as the reason for the states to leave the Union they may have some valid arguments against it but this comination of things it's really painting an interesting picture. The slavery issue may have been the tempest in the teapot but then it all got dumped into the big kettle. If that wasn't bad enough, here comes Lincoln tossing logs on the fire til the pot boiled over.

The fires were terrible and there may well have been rumors or fears that they were being set. There may have been others in other states but unless it's been proven, it's just conjecture. Still, there's a lot of ideas to toss in to that mess. Just the thought of a shortage of food for the people and the livestock would have gotten them in a dither.
