Until recently I didn't understand that the Republicans opposing slavery in the territories didn't want African-Americans in the territories, slave or free. Lincoln said as much during his debates with Senator Douglas. For years Whigs like Henry Clay (Abraham Lincoln's political model) had promoted emancipation AND colonization. That's why laws in states like Indiana, Ohio and Illinois placed so many restrictions on people of color.
