For the sake of perspective, read Southern newspapers printed during 1859. Even with all the heated language and controversies we have come to expect from election campaigns, the year prior to the presidential election of 1860 was rather calm and peaceful. That is, up until October 1859.

Other historians have described events of that month as the 9-11 of the antebellum era. I couldn't agree more.
