"Unfortunately our Heritage has a tarnished image that will never go away. The Southern folk probably never thought of the public relations nightmare that would occur concerning the subject of slavery. Seceding because Lincoln and the Republicans won an election will forever be hard to explain except to only those who choose to try to understand what was going on back then.
We will always have disagreements in how celebrating that heritage should be done. I don't have answers that everyone will like.

This is the image we have to fight every day. One thing that has slapped me in the face a number of times is that most people who are Union bent do not know that slavery was still going on in Union states. They believe the EP freed them all. They've never really read the darn thing and thought it through. I sure don't expect everyone to agree with me on heritage issues but no one will convince me to lay down my Battle Flag. It's also a personal issue with me because they did remove it as the symbol of the HS I graduated from. When I pass on, my class ring is the only thing one of my Granddaughters has said she wanted. It has the Battle Flag and the crest is a Confederate Soldier. Because she has said this, I know she will keep the fire going for her generation. She's been to the cemeteries with me and knows the stories. Also, because she's the one who has wanted to learn, she will probably get the big diamond they all want. We have our ways of picking out the one who is worthy don't we?
