Re: Woodrow Wilson -- VIrginian?

General Joe Wheeler represents Alabama in the Congressional Statuary Hall Collection, despite the fact that he lived elsewhere until after the war. Also, much like Woodrow Wilson, Wheeler spent his childhood outside the region where he lived as an adult. Yet all references to Wheeler you may care to check will call him an Alabamian.

During the thirty years before becoming president, TWW lived and worked north of the Mason-Dixon line. After many years as a member of the faculty of Princeton University, Wilson served as president of the school before becoming Governor of New Jersey. He had been teaching at Bryn Mawr near Philadelphia before accepting a position at Princeton.

Despite being born in Virginia, Wilson passed much of his childhood in Georgia and passed the bar in that state. If any other state wanted to claim TWW, it would be Georgia and not Virginia. Using the "Fighting Joe" Wheeler standard cited above, Wilson has to be credited to New Jersey. If that makes a Southern-born and raised man a Yankee, okay -- TWW is a Yankee.

My point, which you may argue if you wish, there has to be some objective or reasonable standard for making a statement.
